how do you know if you’re schizophrenic if everything you see and hear is real to you? how do you know if your reality isn’t “real”?

and how would you know if you have paranoid schizophrenia? how can anybody but yourself tell you whether or not you’re being paranoid if you’re really sure something’s happening behind your back?

two people have two different realities so who’s to judge which reality is the real one?

I’ve been trying to figure out this one for a really long time now.  I actually just argued with my therapist about it today.  She keeps saying that everything going on with me is a symptom of my illness, and I keep arguing that I’m not sick.  She told me that the way you know something is a symptom of psychosis (re: hearing voices/visual things) is when you’re the only one who hears/sees these things.  If it were real, others would hear/see these things as well.  This becomes difficult when your brain comes up with a ton of reasons for why you’re the only one hearing/seeing these things.  At least, that’s what mine does.  But then I’m told that it’s a “delusion”.  But then I come up with even more reasons for WHY it’s not a delusion, thus the cycle repeats and gets me nowhere.  It’s tough figuring out what’s reality and what’s not.

The only person who can diagnose you with schizophrenia (or any MI) is a psychiatrist or psychologist.  But I know it’s really hard to believe you’re actually sick when everything seems so real.

but how is it an illness? i think someone can be so hyperaware of the universe that things from parallel universes can seep through the fabric of time. see, i’m a very spiritual person (not religiously), and i believe that when someone dies, they just go to another plane of existence, so can’t it possible that i maybe i’m just seeing them?

edit: ^ i can see what you’re saying about making up reasons why it’s not a delusion… wow. thanks.

I believe all of that, too.  The problem is when you’re hyper-awareness begins to cause you to no longer be able to function in day-to-day life.  For example, I no longer walk my dog alone because I worry I’m being followed.  I also frequently find myself running through the halls of my house because I’m terrified something is going to get me.  If I was able to function “normally”, it wouldn’t be a problem.  Does that make sense?

I’m here if you ever need to talk.

that does make sense. thank you so much! i’m just trying to figure this all out. it’s difficult to seek help when there are so few people i can trust, though. but really, thank you so so so much for the support

“I think everybody in this room, at one point in their life, felt like they had no fucking future. And I think that’s the genesis of anything great… You have no future, then you fight against it. It’s like you fight against the universe and say ‘Well, I think you’re full of shit. I’m gonna fight till I’m dead. I have a future.’” —Gerard Way (via mychemquotes)
